Organised by the same people who run La Marmotte, the Granfondo Golfe de Saint Tropez is a lovely early-season sportive – great for some quality miles in scenic surroundings in the company of several hundred enthusiasts. At over 160km and with 2550m of climbing around the Massif de Maures, this is not a trivial challenge, but there are 2 shorter options on offer.
The Granfondo is one of the qualifying events for the UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) and so attracts serious amateur competitors as well as those looking for a more relaxed day.
On Saturday we ride the Massif de l’Esterel west of Cannes, characterised by red volcanic rock, rugged coves and “calanques” on the coast road, and plunging ravines and oak forests up in the hills, before continuing on to Saint Tropez to sign on and stay locally overnight. On Sunday, we ride the sportive, returning to base later in the day.
Combine this event with an exploration of the fantastic cycling the Côte d’Azur has to offer, based in beautiful Beaulieu-sur-mer just down the coast near Nice…make it a long weekend to remember or extend to a full week of early-season training which will pay dividends for the rest of the year.
