"Event Horizon"

We organise a number of our tours around an event – a professional road race, a sportive, triathlon, amateur road race etc – which is sure to make it a trip to remember.

You can join these trips as a lone cyclist joining a mixed group, or, depending on the bookings and the number in your group, it may possible to do these trips as a private tour if you prefer…please enquire.

Whether mixed or private, the group size is small, making these trips very relaxed and friendly.

The sportives may not have the profile of L’Etape du Tour or La Marmotte, but are none the worse for that…it’s great to join a few hundred enthusiasts for the day on routes carefully chosen to showcase the very best of the locale, and you have the choice of challenging yourself against some of the region’s top riders, or enjoying a relaxed day out on the bike with plenty of joie de vivre and bonhomie.

Typically seamless logistics from the moment you’re met at the airport.

The base in Beaulieu is perfectly situated, everything falls into place effortlessly so you really can just focus on enjoying the adventure and relaxing in great company – whether back at base over a coffee or beer with the stunning Med views at sunrise/sunset, or dining out at the great local restaurants.

Pro Racing: La Primavera, Milan-San Remo - the "sprinters classic"

Friday 17 – Monday 20 March

Combine early season riding in the sunshine with the chance to watch the professionals at the finish of the longest of the single-day classics, La Primavera Milan-San Remo.

At 298km Milan-San Remo is known as the “sprinters’ classic”, although there have been many famous escapes on the Poggio (150m of height gain over its 4km length) which have spoiled the day for the sprinters.

We cycle along the coast to San Remo and you have the choice of watching on the Poggio, or down in the town as they approach the finish.

But it’s not just about watching the pros…this trip is about getting in some great early season riding in the sunshine!

Depending on your arrival time, you will be met at Nice Airport for the transfer to your hotel. Arrive in the morning, and join an afternoon group ride, exploring the coast road and one or two of the local climbs.

On Saturday, join a group ride; given the Italian flavour of this long weekend, we tackle two of the best local climbs in France before stunning descent to Breil-sur-Roya. From there we follow a narrow gorge before crossing into Italy and descending steadily to the coast at Ventimiglia and then returning to France along the coast road via Monaco.

On Sunday we ride along the coast to San Remo to watch the race, with the option of exploring more of the Ligurian terrain including the Colle Langan, Monte Ceppo and Bajardo.

On Monday there will be the opportunity for a final group ride before the transfer back to Nice airport.

Sportive: the Granfondo Golfe de Saint Tropez

Thursday 06 – Monday 10 April

In April, the Côte d’Azur springs into life, and what better way to experience it than by including an early-season sportive as part of a 5-day trip.

The Granfondo Golfe de Saint Tropez offers 3 routes, the longest of which is a challenging 179km with 2500m of climbing starting in Saint Tropez and describing an arc through the Massif des Maures, but if that sounds like a bit too much, there are two shorter route options.

Arrive Thursday, transfer to your hotel, and join an afternoon ride. On Friday, there is a full-day ride taking in 3 of the iconic local climbs: the Col d’Eze, the Col de la Madone and the Col de Braus.

On Saturday we explore the beautiful Massif de l’Esterel to the west of Cannes – a stunning stretch of coastline with rugged coves and “calanques”, and up into the hills defined by plunging ravines and oak forests. From there, we drive to Saint Tropez to sign on for the sportive, and stay locally overnight.

The sportive starts on the Sunday morning at a very civilised 08h00, and having regrouped at the finish, we drive back to base.

We have time for a final ride on the Monday before your transfer to the airport and your return home.

Sportive: La Vençoise

Friday 12 – Tuesday 16 May

As the name suggests, this sportive starts and finishes in Vence, a pretty town to the northwest of Nice.

A pre-sportive warm-up is necessary as the route starts with the 600m climb of the Col de Vence, a cracking climb up onto a plateau. From there, the route tracks West, taking in via a stunning quiet road the second of the major climbs, the Col de l’Ecre before heading north to tackle the Col de Bleine, at 1440m the high-point of the sportive. From there, the route loops back towards Vence climbing the Col de Vence, this time from the North a much shorter and easier climb, finishing with a glorious, fast descent to the finish in Vence.

col de vence

At 135km and with 2800m of height gain, this is a challenging sportive and a tough day in the saddle, but one that fits nicely with a number of days riding in the Côte d’Azur.

It’s an 08:00 start; you have the option of 06:00 start on the Saturday to arrive around 07:00 in time to sign on and pick up your number and timing chip, or we can arrive the previous day and explore the beautiful Esteron region, and stay locally overnight.

Combine this event with an exploration of the fantastic cycling the Côte d’Azur has to offer, based in beautiful Beaulieu-sur-mer just down the coast near Nice…make it a long weekend to remember or extend to a full week of early-season training which will pay dividends for the rest of the year.

It picks up the Tour route in Saint Julien du Verdon, taking in the Col de la Colle St Michel which as well as being a beautiful and steady climb also offers one of the most exhilarating descents, then does a second loop to the west picking up the Tour route for a second time at Barrême before the return to St André les Alpes.

Sportive: La Mercan'Tour

Saturday 17 – Wednesday 21 June

The 2nd edition of La Mercan’Tour takes place in June 2017, and with 175km of distance and 4600m of climbing including 3 HC climbs one of which is the highest road pass in Europe the Col de la Bonette, this sportive is sure to join the likes of La Marmotte in being one of the “must do” sportives around the world.

Starting in the valley in Guillaumes, the race climbs the valley and the first col of the day, the Col de Cayolle (a 15km climb at 7.1% from Entraunes). There is a beautiful descent to Barcelonnette, open views to begin with, narrowing as the road finishes its descent through a stunning gorge. The route climbs steadily East to Jausiers, from where the climb proper to the Cime de la Bonette starts: 24km averaging 6.7% to the rarefied atmosphere at 2802m. A 50km descent follows, just a couple of lumps and bumps before the final climb of the day from St Sauveur sur Tinée, the Col de la Couillole (17km at 7.3%). This is one of the most picturesque climbs in the Mercantour, and from the top, the road then undulates before the final kick up to the finish at Valberg.

Arriving Saturday, we transfer directly to Valberg to sign on and get in a nice warm up ride.

Sportive: La Fausto Coppi

Saturday 08 – Monday 10 July

This is a short, 2-night excursion into Italy to experience one of the most challenging sportives on the European calendar, La Fausto Coppi…177km with 4125m of climbing, with the option of a shorter 111km Mediofondo with 2500m climbing.

Antipasti

The ride starts and finishes in Cuneo, so it’s a great one to do without the hassle of many of the bigger sportives which start and finish in different places. It’s a gentle start, the first 40km heading NW out of Cuneo on flat roads, but with the silhouette of the mountains up ahead to remind us of what’s to come. Then at last comes the first test, the 730m climb to the Santuario di Valmala at 1380m.

Primo piatto

From here, we’re well into the mountains, heading SW towards the border with France, and the second climb of the day, the gentle 525m ascent of the Piatta Soprano.

Secondo piatto

Reminiscent of the Telegraph / Galibier “one-two” on La Marmotte, no sooner have we descended off the Piatta Soprano than we start the main course, the ascent of Colle Faunieri. Similar to the Galibier climb, it starts with a fairly gentle gradient up the valley for 130m of height gain but then, with 100km already in the legs, it kicks up into the climb proper to reach the high-point of the route at 2480m.

In total, the climb is an astonishing 1790m of height gain.

If you add in the Piatta Soprano, it’s over 2300m of height gain with just a short descent in the middle.

Dolce

Less of a dessert, and more of a sting in the tail, no sooner have we descended an incredible 1740m than we hit the final climb of the day, 570m up to the Madonna del Coletto.

But with the Madonna behind us, it’s an exhilarating descent out of the mountains and back to Cuneo.

The Mediofondo is a respectable challenge too – 111km and 2500m of climbing including the Colle Faunieri and the Madonna del Coletto.

Arrive in Nice on Saturday morning, in time for the transfer to Cuneo. We sign on for the sportive, check into the hotel, with time for a short warm-up ride on the roads around Cuneo.

The sportive starts at 07h00 on the Sunday (no need to get up at 4:00AM as with L’Etape!!), we re-group at the finish for the transfer back to Nice, where we spend the second night.

There is the option on the Monday of a morning ride from Nice, taking in the two most famous local climbs, the 500m Col d’Eze which features as the final stage time-trial in Paris-Nice, and the 925m Col de la Madone which most of the local pro’s use as their benchmark climb to test their form.
